World Health Day recognizes a different health issue every year. Topics include physical and mental health issues such as depression, addiction, cancer, and other global issues. Each year the World Health Organization announces a different theme that usually encompasses several issues under one canvas. In 2021, the theme is “Building a healthier, fairer world.” At Oceanfront Recovery, we invite our clients in Laguna Beach, CA, to commemorate this day for all those struggling with health and wellness worldwide.
World Health Day 2021
This year’s theme of “Building a healthier, fairer world” hits home for anyone who has needed mental or physical health care during the pandemic. In the United States, many cities and states remained on lockdown through much of the COVID-19 crisis. This made it more difficult than ever for those with substance use disorders to get the care and assistance they need to maintain recovery.
Some people struggle to make a living or provide proper food and housing for their families across the world. With poor employment opportunities, the pandemic underscored inequalities among different racial and gender groups. With little access to clean water or food security, illness and premature death are a natural part of life in many parts of the world. Fortunately, adequate health care is available in the United States, and Oceanfront Recovery facilities facilitate long-term recovery.
History of World Health Day
In 1950, the World Health Organization celebrated the first World Health Day. Each year, April 7th commemorates the founding of WHO and stresses a unique theme. WHO encourages governmental and non-governmental organizations to promote local and regional events in honor of the theme and raise awareness about public health issues.
Substance Use Disorders impact millions of people around the world. Addictive behaviors have been highlighted in the directory of health topics on World Health Day’s office page. Overcoming the mental and physical impacts of addiction takes courage and perseverance. Our therapeutic and medical staff are proud to support clients in making their crucial first steps toward wellness.
Directory of Health Topics
The directory is a great resource on personal health topics such as addictive behaviors, suicide, and depression. If you suffer from substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health challenges, you are not alone. These themes have appeared in past World Health Day campaigns.
Depression
In 2017, World Health Day highlighted depression, a condition suffered by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Some of the symptoms of depression include the following:
- Persistent sadness
- Lack of interest
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Suicidal thoughts or actions
If you suffer from depression, you know that it can disturb your life, making it difficult to work, sleep, eat, or concentrate. Depression is a leading cause of disability around the world. Because the effects of depression recur and may last a long time, it’s important to seek help for this condition. Fortunately, psychological and medical treatment can help those with severe depression.
Oceanfront Recovery offers dual diagnosis treatment designed around individual needs. While completing your addiction treatment program, you can receive therapy for mental health disorders such as the following:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Mood disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
If you were not previously diagnosed with a mental health disorder, we would assess psychological or psychiatric issues. Often, underlying mental health issues lie at the heart of substance use disorders. Therefore, mental health wellness plays a huge role in the likelihood of your long-term sobriety and recovery.
Addictive Behaviors
The World Health Day directory also has a page addressing addictive behaviors such as video gaming, gambling, and other process addictions. If you have a substance use disorder, you may be prone to process addictions as well. We will evaluate you for co-occurring mental health disorders during your addiction treatment to ensure that you receive the right treatment.
