Every physician in the United States will soon be receiving the letter included below from the US surgeon general. Surgeon General of the United States Dr. Vivek Murthy has an especially important and historically unparalleled reason for sending the letter. Opioid drugs such as Percocet, Oxycontin, and Vicodin, among many others, cause more than 1,000 emergency room visits and kill 78 people every day. Learn more as the surgeon general sends letter doctors concerning opioid crisis.
From the Surgeon General
Dr. Vivek Murthy begins the letter with the following plea to physicians, “I am asking for your help to solve an urgent health crisis facing America: the opioid epidemic.”
The Surgeon General tells physicians that he understands their desire to keep their patients out of pain. The top US doctor writes, “It is important to recognize that we arrived at this place on a path paved with good intentions.” But it’s now becoming increasingly clear that those good intentions have gone horribly wrong. Earlier this year in March, in fact, the Center for Disease Control issued an unusual CDC report providing guidelines for opioid prescriptions. And just recently in July the Obama Administration took more action to address the Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic. The Surgeon General was recently on the TV show CBS This Morning and talked about the crisis and the letter. This is currently an epidemic of historic proportions that kills more people every day. Here’s hoping that these continued efforts will help to alleviate the terrible crisis that America is facing.
The current opioid crisis has spread to all corners of the United States. The opioid crisis has shed light on a large number of prescriptions doctors prescribe to their patients.
