Meditation is a great way to manage stress. If you want to build resilience over time, it can help you feel less stressed and is a great tool to use daily for your mind and body. If you want to get into a mindful place, learn some of the techniques in this five minute meditation.
The biggest struggle with meditation is getting started. You may feel like it is hard to focus or concentrate early in the morning or late at night. The best way to get started is find a time that works for you. If you can fit it in during the morning, at lunch breaks or after dinner, then give it a try. During a bath or shower is another great time to meditate. Just five minutes of meditation every day can clear your mind and make you feel more focused and present. Here’s how to make the time count:
- Set aside the time. Get a timer and set it for five minutes. You need this time to relax and not worry, so set a timer that will keep track of time for you. You will be surprised how quickly five minutes goes by!
Relax your body
Close your eyes and try to relax. Take a few deep breaths from your diaphragm and release tension from your body. Imagine stress leaving your body through your toes and draining away from you.
Clear your mind
When working on clearing the mind of thoughts, rather than focusing on ‘nothing,’ focus on ‘being,’ and when thoughts enter the mind, acknowledge them and try to get present again. Focus on doing this well and not worrying about everyone else. If you accept bringing your mind back to present is the meditation, it will be easier to keep the mind still.
Continue this journey for five minutes and return to your normal daily activities. This should bring about increased relaxation and focus. Focus on the sensations in the body, the breath, and letting go. Doing this on a regular basis can help provide space for healing. If you find yourself struggling with meditation, make sure to find a comfortable place to do it. Distractions from meditation can keep you from being focused and reaping the great benefits and rewards. Don’t focus too much on doing things right, just focus on doing them at all and staying present. Playing meditation music or using aromatherapy can be helpful for some people. Do what feels right for you. Meditation is a personal experience so fit it in where you can and don’t worry about missing anything.
