Geeking is a term used by drug users to describe binge crack use – or using crack cocaine over and over in a short period of time at increasingly higher doses. Once a person is addicted, they will do anything to get the drug, including stealing or even prostitution. Binging crack can lead to addiction but it is also used to describe paranoia seen in people using crack. Learn more about geeking and how to help a person suffering from addiction.
What is Crack
Cocaine is made from the leaves of the coca plant, native to South America. Crack cocaine has been processed into rock-like crystals (aka ‘rock’). A person heats the rock to create vapors breathed in to get high. The name crack comes from the crackling nose the rock makes during heating.
Binge crack use was defined as when a person uses crack cocaine as much as they can until they run out or are unable to use any more. Researchers di da study and had people describe their behaviors over the preceding thirty days. People described in the study:
- Binging at home, a friend’s house, hotel, partner’s home, crack house, alley, public restroom, or other place
- Typical binges took place over three days on average and involved 40 cocaine rocks
- When the people stopped binging, nearly half of them stopped because they ran out or ran out of money and over fifty percent stopped from exhaustion or sickness from too much drug use
Other Health Issues
Cocaine can have major health impacts on a person’s heart and blood vessels. This increases their risk of having a heart attack or stroke. These effects include raising blood pressure and heart rate, as well as narrowing blood vessels. Headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, dilated pupils, and increased body temperature are just a few of the ways people experienced a binge. Cocaine use lowers a person’s inhibitions and impairs their judgment, often leading to promiscuous behavior which may increase their risk of HIV infection. The dangers of using this drug in this way along with other drugs cannot be understated. People can and have died from using the drugs in this way because the body is simply too overwhelmed by the amount of drugs in the system. People should seek help for loved ones or themselves if they suspect they are addicted or are geeking more often and need additional support to quit.
